Middlesbrough Values

The government is encouraging us all to consider and uphold “British values”. Members of Middlesbrough Council of Faiths wish to contribute to this debate in a constructive way. The different religious traditions our members follow, enshrine ancient wisdom in their guidance on values, ideals, and behaviour. The values we share, can contribute positively to living together in our town.
We plan to develop a debate on our shared values, and invite all people who have something to contribute to this debate, of any faith or none, to join us. What are the values we seek to live by, and would hope others too would live by? These themes seem to be common to all the great religious traditions:
- Treat each inidividual as you would like them to treat you
- Care for those who are vulnerable, in need or in difficulty
- Be compassionate as God is compassionate and merciful
- Be truthful and speak plainly: act justly and fairly
- Be generous
- Value the unique qualities, experiences, and abilities of every person
- Respect laws that are just and fair: challenge laws you believe are not
- Seek to overcome evil with good: aim for constructive change
- Healthy relationships which enrich us all, are founded on mutual respect, trust, and commitment
- Take care of your body, mind, and spirit: do not abuse others
- Care for the environment, for the benefit of our own and future generations
We invite you to comment, amend, or add to these values, to see if we can reach a common mind amongst many of us in Middlesbrough on the values we seek to live by.
Join in the first part of our debate on these values
