Serene Reflection

The website NorthEastSereneReflection.org.uk is of three meditation groups in the North East of England. We meet each week to meditate and share our practice as Buddhists within the Serene Reflection Meditation tradition, more commonly known as Soto Zen Buddhism.

We are affiliated to the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives, which guides us in our practice. We are also fortunate to live within easy travelling distance of Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey, a training monastery in West Allendale, Northumberland. Through contact with the monks at Throssel, as well as the wider network of lay practitioners, meditation groups and monks within the order, we are part of a healthy and active Buddhist Sangha. Through practising together we aim to come to know the Buddha’s Truth within the unfolding daily practice of our everyday lives.

Newcomers are welcome, meditation instruction can be given to get you started. Or if you have been before and have lost touch with the group then you can log onto the site which will be useful in telling you what’s going on and where we are currently meeting. If you have any queries please get in touch.

The Teesside group has been in existence for 5 years and is affiliated to the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives. We meet every week as well as joining up with the Newcastle group when a monk from our order visits usually bi-monthly. We also have visits by monks to Teesside usually on a Saturday this tends to be about every 3 months or so.We are very fortunate that Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey is so close to us which allows the group to attend and benefit from the Festival and Meditation days on a regular basis.

Meeting Times and Location

We meet every Wednesday night in the Quaker Friends Meeting House, Cambridge Road, Acklam, Middlesbrough. at 7.45 starting at 8.00 with a short service followed by two periods of meditation and finishing with another short service. If you are visiting for the first time please try to contact Billy Barnett or John Adams beforehand and we will arrange to give meditation instruction before the start of the evening.
